Mad Love
The lovely young Lydia resists all attempts by her guardians to select a suitable husband for her. Although she comes from a wealthy family, she considers it more romantic to choose a man from among the lower class. She pursues passion and romance over the common upper-class accoutrements of wealth and position.
Her arrogant aunt, Mrs. Malaprop, strives by various means to force Lydia into submission, assisted by old friend Anthony Absolute, whose handsome young son, Captain Jack Absolute, serves in the military. Jack has adopted an alias, Lieutenant Bonny, because he wishes to pursue Lydia and knows she will not see him if she knows him to be among the upper class. Bonny and Lydia carry on a secret romance, but a recent quarrel created by Lydia is keeping them apart. Lydia's young cousin Julia sympathizes with her afflicted cousin. Julia is pursued in love by Fred, who is obsessed with her, but is overcome with jealousy.
Mrs. Malaprop has suitors of her own which she attempts to conceal from Lydia. A clever servant manipulates circumstances for her financial benefit and personal pleasure, mixing things up wonderfully. Several men nearly come to blows in pursuit of the women.
Romance and wit abound in this humorous play adapted in modern English by Rolf McEwen from The Rivals by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Originally written in the 1770's, this version incorporates language that is easily understood. It is set in England in 1910.
The clever plot and irresistible humor make for enjoyable, entertaining reading.
