"She said that she would dance with me if I brought her red roses"

"ma in tutto il mio giardino non c'è una rosa rossa" gridò il giovane studente

"but in all my garden there is no red rose" cried the young Student

Dal suo nido nel leccio l'usignolo lo udì

from her nest in the holm-oak tree the nightingale heard him

e guardò attraverso le foglie, e si meravigliò

and she looked out through the leaves, and wondered

"Nessuna rosa rossa in tutto il mio giardino!" gridò.

"No red rose in all my garden!" he cried

e i suoi bellissimi occhi pieni di lacrime

and his beautiful eyes filled with tears

"Da quali piccole cose dipende la felicità!"

"On what little things does happiness depend!"

About The Author

The ever-quotable Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish playwright, novelist, essayist, and poet who delighted Victorian England with his legendary wit. He found critical and popular success with his scintillating plays, chiefly The Importance of Being Earnest, while his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, scandalized readers. Imprisoned for two years for homosexual behavior, Wilde moved to France after his release, where he died destitute.
