Luke's Gospel stands out as unique among the Gospels in various ways. For one thing, it is the longest of the Gospels, starting earlier in Jesus' life than the others (with the announcement of the birth of John the Baptist), and ending later (with Jesus' ascension to heaven). Only Luke reveals anything about Jesus' childhood, describing his family's visit to Jerusalem when he was 12 years old.
Maybe because of this, the gospel of Luke remains a place where we can encounter Jesus anew each time we enter into its words and then take that encounter out into our world and lives. Continuing the journey with Jesus is as challenging today as it was two millennia ago. His teachings are still hard to hear. His parables are still shocking to consider. It is just that hearing them so often has dulled our senses to what is being said and taught in the words.
