In the summer of 1948, 12-year old Edgar Howard is visited by the most amazing man he would ever know--his grandfather. During their short time together, Edgar is taught how to throw a baseball, how to take good care of his things (especially his baseball cards) and most importantly, how to dream. But the cruel hand of fate intervenes, leaving Edgar's delicate world of hope--and his one and only dream--shattered.
Some sixty years later, hapless old Edgar finds himself at the tail end of a most common life. While sitting on his porch, listening to the baseball game on his radio, an unexplainable phenomenon appears. Rummaging through his helpless mind, the unseen intruder extracts memories of his life and, one by one, Edgar is forced to relive his every failure--harsh reminders of a life that never was. Even the tragic events of that summer of his youth, long since buried, are brought to the surface.
