Look inside the book:

Let us content ourselves to be earthly creatures, and hold communion of spirit in such modes as are ordained to us—by letters (dipping our pens as deep as may be into our hearts) by heartfelt words, when they can be audible; by glances—through which medium spirits do really seem to talk in their own language—and by holy kisses, which I do think have something supernatural in them.

...But the annoyance is not on my own account; but because it seems as if the letters were prophaned by being smiled at—but this is, after all, a mere fantasy, since the smilers know nothing about my Dove, nor that I really have a Dove; nor can they be certain that the letters come from a lady, nor, especially, can they have the remotest imagination what heavenly letters they are.

About Nathaniel Hawthorne, the Author:

Hawthorne returned to writing and published The Scarlet Letter in mid-March 1850,47 including a preface which refers to his three-year tenure in the Custom House and makes several allusions to local politicians, who did not appreciate their treatment.

...58 The House of the Seven Gables (1851), which poet and critic James Russell Lowell said was better than The Scarlet Letter and called 'the most valuable contribution to New England history that has been made'59 and The Blithedale Romance (1852), his only work written in the first person,29 were written here.
