About the Author

Alan D. Gaff is an independent scholar and the author of many books, including Lou Gehrig: The Lost Memoir, Bayonets in the Wilderness, Blood in the Argonne, and On Many a Bloody Field, hailed as “a masterpiece of Civil War scholarship” (The Bookwatch). He lives in Indiana.

Angelo Di Loreto is a versatile audiobook narrator and voice actor from Buffalo, New York, based in New York City. He has narrated titles for Audible Studios, Tantor Media, and an extensive body of self-produced work for ACX. As an actor, he has worked in various productions with the St. Joseph Academy Theater Company for the past few years and has studied and worked with voice-over and acting coaches such as Marla Kirban and Jayme Mattler. In addition to acting, Angelo is an accomplished pianist and composer, and regularly tours with his various projects.

Kyle Tait is a professionally trained voice actor and sports broadcaster based in Atlanta, Georgia. He’s done voice work for TV and radio ads around the world, corporate training videos, whiteboard and explainer videos, documentaries, audiobooks, and more. He’s narrated more than twenty titles on Audible and iTunes, across genres spanning from sports history to crime thrillers to self-help.

In addition to his voice work, Tait is an established sports broadcaster, calling baseball, basketball, and football on ESPN3, as well as serving as a studio host on multiple national college networks with IMG College.

In this surprising rediscovery, historian Gaff (Lou Gehrig) presents the lost memoir of New York Yankee Gehrig (1903–1941), written in 1927. In a conversational style, Gehrig discusses his humble childhood as the son of German immigrant parents in New York City and the respect he has for his other sports figures, such as teammate Babe Ruth, rival Ty Cobb, and manager Miller “Hug” Huggins. Gehrig’s love for the game is palpable, especially after winning the 1927 World Series, of which he writes, “I’m proud of the game and all who play it. And as long as I wear a big-league uniform, I will give all I can to the game.” Gaff follows up the memoir with a detailed look into Lou Gehrig’s life, discussing his career and the exuberant excesses of the Yankees’ hell-raising lifestyle (mainly Ruth’s), as well as Gehrig’s battle with ALS, with which he was diagnosed in 1939. Special mention is given to Gehrig’s legacy; even in his final days, he dedicated his life to trying to help others who were suffering from their own hardships. Gaff’s volume is a fitting tribute to an inspiring baseball legend. (May)
