After working at a small Manhattan clothing boutique for a little over a year, Torry Hansen requested permission from the owners to let her design the window displays. It was not easy for her to ask for what she wanted, particularly since she had pushed away her love for fashion after her mother had died in a tragic accident. All her life she had yielded to others, stuffing down her desires so as not to jeopardize her relationships. She became increasingly dissatisfied with her life, struggling to express herself yet afraid of the repercussions. Nevertheless, she made the decision to take control of her happiness by speaking up and no longer shying away from the pain associated with loving fashion. The window dressing was her first step.
The decorations quickly caused quite a stir, even catching the attention of Evelyn Allbright, who decided to have her magazine, Trending, feature the shop, its designs, and the window display designer. A woman of action, Evelyn was used to telling others what she wanted and receiving it. Recognizing Torry's talents, Evelyn became fascinated and set out to convince Torry to leave the little boutique for bigger and better things. While Torry struggled to express what she wanted, what she needed, Evelyn learned that she could not expect her demands to be met unquestioningly, at least not outside the office. As Evelyn's interest in Torry transformed from professional to personal, so did her actions during her quest to keep Torry in her life.
