Overview

In the early spring morning light, shortly after seven o'clock, the body looked like a pile of debris covered by brown and black leaves left over from the previous autumn.

A decorated war hero with severe amnesia sustained twelve years before, Clifford Dumont has remained lost in the middle of his life until unexpected events challenge him to confront his suppressed fears and the black wall of his past.

When he finds the dead body of his co-worker, Jean-Paul, at a national historical battlefield, Clifford is jarred out of his day-to-day routines. His complacency is further challenged by the appearance of an ex-girlfriend, Bonnie, who pressures Clifford to find his memories to help her deal with her own past.

As Clifford struggles to find out how and why Jean-Paul died, he is joined in his quest by members of a local group of amateur paranormal investigators who are already investigating decades of mysterious disappearances along the National Pike, the old highway that crosses their county.

Lost on the National Pike probes with intensity the power and complex dynamics of memory in shaping our identities. Allie, Clifford's boss, warns, "There might be great dangers there... and we shouldn't just go crashing through the forest in our search for insight."

Nonetheless, the characters are drawn into a whirlpool of unanswered questions, terrifying fears, and inexplicable circumstances that lead them to make life and death choices to find or release themselves from the truth.
