Book editor Emily Bryant finds herself unexpectedly in the charming town of Cascata on California’s Lost Coast, holding the keys to her grandmother’s rambling Victorian mansion. While sorting through her grandmother’s things, Emily learns that she must edit old manuscripts to inherit the estate. It’s a strange request from a family member who was basically a stranger.

Emily quickly realizes that there’s something different about these manuscripts. Any changes she makes come true. At first, she embraces the gift. She has a chance to help characters find true love or chart a new course for their future. But then things go terribly wrong. Her edits have the opposite effect. The sweet and funky seaside community of Cascata is reeling from the chaos Emily has created. Everything she thought she believed about her family and her past is in jeopardy, and no amount of editing can fix the damage she’s done.

Then she finds one last manuscript. If Emily can get this edit right, maybe she’ll have a chance to create a new narrative for herself and everyone around her.

About the Author

Ellie Alexander, author of the Bakeshop Mystery Series and the Sloan Krause Mysteries, is a Pacific Northwest native who spends ample time testing recipes in her home kitchen or at one of the many famed coffeehouses nearby. When she’s not coated in flour, she can be found outside exploring hiking trails and trying to burn off calories consumed in the name of research.

Megan Trout is a Bay Area-based narration, voice, and theater artist. She has been seen and heard on stage, screen, radio, and podcast. No matter what form they take, she loves stories. She loves to create detailed, tangible worlds for her and her listeners to get lost in together. Megan enjoys most genres . . . but if she had to narrow it down she'd list: terrifying thrillers, poignant fiction, true crime, historical fiction, and harrowing biographies of courageous women (in no particular order).

Alexander's (Donut Disturb) latest follows book editor Emily Bryant, who has been bequeathed her grandmother's Victorian mansion in the quaint town of Cascata, CA. There is one stipulation—in order to inherit, Emily must edit a stack of manuscripts in the attic. When the edits Emily makes on the page start coming true in real life, she realizes that the manuscripts have the power to change lives. While fans of Alexander's cozy mysteries might expect another tidy story, this novel holds some surprises. To be sure, it starts by hinting at found-family tropes and gentle magic, but it isn't long before Alexander tackles heavier topics. While there's sweetness and humor, listeners may also shed a tear or two by the end. Megan Trout is the perfect narrator for the novel, creating a competent, professional-sounding voice for Emily but still leaving room for the full range of her emotions. Emily's emotional journey remains steady for much of the book, following a classic relationship fiction route from plans going awry to understanding the nature of happiness and success.
