Overview

An intriguing, if flawed, session. Banjo player Dick Oxtot teamed with clarinetist Clem Raymond to record an album of New Orleans stomps, blues and struts in 1958. The results have recently been issued on CD by Delmark, and they're recommended mainly due to Raymond's squiggly, entrancing solos and charming vocals on "Clem's Blues," "Keep Du Dah" and "Just A Little While to Stay Here." Much of the backing band is little more than competent, although they sound enthusiastic and don't bog down the proceedings. But it's Raymond and Oxtot's contributions that make this worthwhile, and a find for traditional jazz fans. ~ Ron Wynn
