PreS-Four board books introduce words loosely associated with the seasons. In Galoshes, a white, bald, round-headed child dons galoshes, shirt, overalls, and rain slicker before going out to stomp, sing, save worms, and sail a boat. In winter, the child puts on longjohns, pants, mittens, coat, hat, and boots before going out to sled, skate, and slip. In fall, it's on with a sweater, socks, scarf, and clogs. The art does not always convey the meaning of the text. For instance, in Swimsuit, the spread for the word "sun" shows the youngster on a towel in the sand. The sun is nowhere in sight. The ambiguity of the text and illustrations is a recurring problem in all four titles and thus, each book fails to convey the concepts for the intended audience.-Olga R.
