About the Author

John Fernie is Emeritus Professor of Retail Marketing at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. He has written and contributed to numerous textbooks and papers on retail management, especially in the field of retail logistics.

Leigh Sparks is Professor of Retail Studies at the Institute for Retail Studies, University of Stirling, Scotland. He is on the editorial boards of several leading marketing and business journals.


John Fernie is Emeritus Professor of Retail Marketing at Heriot-Watt University. He was previously Professor of Retailing&Logistics and also Director of the Institute for Retail Studies at the University of Stirling. He has written and contributed to numerous textbooks and papers on retail management, especially in the field of retail logistics. He is editor of the International Journal of Retail and Distribution Management, and received the prestigious award of Editor of the Year in 1997, in addition to Leading Editor awards in 1994 and 1998. He is on the editorial boards of other leading journals in the field. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and an active member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
Leigh Sparks is Professor of Retail Studies at the Institute for Retail Studies, University of Stirling. He is editor of the leading European retail journal (The International Review of Retail, Distribution and Consumer Research), and on the editorial boards of several leading marketing and business journals. In 2002-2004, he was a member of the UK Department of Trade and Industry's Retail Strategy Group. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and Chair of the Academy of Marketing Research Committee.
