About the Author

Anna Dewdey passed away in September 2016, at the age of fifty, from cancer. A teacher, mother, and enthusiastic proponent of reading aloud to children, she continually honed her skills as an artist and writer and published her first Llama Llama book in 2005. Her passion for creating extended to home and garden, and she lovingly restored an eighteenth-century farmhouse in southern Vermont. She wrote, painted, gardened, and lived there with her partner, Reed, her two daughters, two wirehaired pointing griffons, and one bulldog. Anna was a warm-hearted, wonderful, wise soul who will be forever missed, but whose spirit lives on in her books.

Vocabulary describing a range of feelings ("joy," "surprised," "worried") is presented in colorful letters to make these words stand out from the rest of the text on the page, and the illustrations offer visual cues to accompany each emotion. The framing of the story around familiar childhood rituals lends a comforting feel to the narrative, and the rhyming text is easy to read aloud, making for a cozy story. Those seeking a deeper take on emotions may be left wanting more, as Llama Llama floats from one feeling to the next with minimal processing. Perhaps the surface-level approach will prompt discussions between adults and children about times they've experienced the emotions playing out on the page.
