Overview

Ceceilia Haasis-Nordeman was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in the fall of 2014. Here, nearly 7 years later, she shares reflections on her life and her perspective on living with a terminal disease.

Her story describes her inner thoughts and outer challenges of living while knowing that she will die of ALS. The disease has gradually robbed her of the ability to control her muscles and to breathe on her own, yet her mind is brilliant.

This book takes us into the "shock and awe" of her diagnosis and into her determination to live the joy of life. It offers insights to people living with the disease and to their caregivers and friends. They need to know what it is like to live with a terminal illness, in order to support their loved ones with compassion.

On a practical level, she offers invaluable tips on dealing with insurers, hiring caregivers, maintaining relationships, and traveling the world despite difficulty. Airlines could learn a thing or two about accommodation from her.

Ceceilia tells an amazing story about living with ALS. She is an inspiration for anyone touched by terminal illness.

About the Author

Ceceilia Haasis-Nordeman has spent much of her life advocating for people living with disabilities and disenfranchisement. Before her illness, she worked for 12 years as a program manager for people living with disability, assisting them with obtaining education, employment, and other resources. Ironically, in this role, she led an ALS support group, which later gave her insight into her own illness. She cares about people who often were on the fringes of society; she volunteered on boards of the local homeless shelter, the domestic violence shelter, and PORA—an organization that supports survivors of prostitution.

Ceceilia has a passion for photography and has beautifully documented her travels around the world. Her work has been displayed at multiple venues.

She has a voracious curiosity and love of life that even ALS has not diminished. A lover of travel and art, Ceceilia has continued to live as few others could imagine.
