About the Author

William Godwin (1756-1836) was an influential British writer, political philosopher, and journalist. A London radical, Godwin was the father of Mary Wollstonecraft (later Shelley), author of FRANKENSTEIN. Although middle-class in his background and upbringing, Godwin grew more radical during his life. He was an early proponent of utilitarianism and is recognized as an early anarchist.
