Description: This is a quick and easy-to-use reference for the interpretation of liver biopsies. The photographs are of good quality and they illustrate pertinent histological patterns and pathological features of the disease in question. Good comparative tables highlight the key differences between various clinical entities.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a "first-base" liver pathology reference to practicing pathologists and gastroenterologists. This is a commonly overlooked aspect in liver pathology. The majority of liver pathology references are exceedingly in depth and exhaustive, making them cumbersome for the average practicing pathologist to use regularly. This book is an excellent resource that can be accessed and interpreted quickly and used to help navigate through a variety of differential diagnoses.
Audience: It is directed at practicing pathologists, hepatologists, gastroenterologists, internists, and trainees. It will be of most help to pathology residents and general practice pathology attendings, while hepatologists and gastroenterologists may find it to be useful when they need a quick definition of a pathological feature.
Features: The book covers the wide spectrum of liver diseases in an organized and concise manner. Chapters range from acute and chronic diseases to transplant pathology and pediatric pathology. The book does an excellent job of illustrating the key histopathological findings of various liver diseases and uses a wide range of comparative tables and well-organized charts. Some of the most helpful tables illustrate the differing histological features between several diseases often found together in differential diagnoses. The sections on transplant rejection come up a little short, in that they tend to illustrate the features of more advanced rejection and spend little time discussing the subtle nuances of indeterminate/mild rejection. This tends to be a difficult area for many practicing pathologists and it would be helpful to have a little more information on these topics. The index is somewhat sparse and, in some instances, difficult to use. For example, you must look up "chronic viral hepatitis" to find information on hepatitis C. It would be helpful to have that page number also listed under "Hepatitis C".
Assessment: This book is very helpful as a quick reference or guide to differential diagnosis. It provides a general overview of a wide variety of liver pathology and does not slow readers down with extraneous information. However, practicing pathologists should refer to a more in-depth book for the more difficult questions.
