Live With Mansu
"Live with Mansu" is a children's book created to support the revitalization of Jejueo, the indigenous language of Jeju Island. Drawing from phrases documented in A Sketch Grammar of Jejueo (O'Grady, Yang, Yang, 2022), the book is illustrated by Yeeun Myung, with the story curated by Yaejun Myung. This work is part of ongoing efforts to preserve and promote Jejueo, a language once considered a dialect of Korean, but now recognized for its distinctiveness due to its unintelligibility to native Korean speakers. In 2010, UNESCO classified Jejueo as an endangered language, with most fluent speakers being elderly residents of Jeju Island. To help reverse this trend, "Live with Mansu" has been developed as part of 'The Jeju Project' a revitalization initiative founded by Yaejun Myung in December 2023. Through engaging storytelling, this book aims to inspire language learning among young children, cultivating the next generation of Jejueo speakers. The book takes creative inspiration from the simplicity and adventurous spirit of William Steig's "CDB!", presenting readers with diverse environments and introducing them to essential Jejueo phrases in an approachable, fun way. By immersing children in the language through everyday situations, "Live with Mansu" hopes to broaden their understanding and appreciation of this rich cultural heritage.
