Overview

On the Nashville stop of their 2015 tour, Ultimate Painting stopped by Third Man Records to record their live set directly to tape in front of an enthusiastic audience. The results were released in May of 2016 and give fans of the band who might not be able to see them play live a good example of how they sound on-stage. The Third Man setup captures the group with perfect clarity, a feat that was made easier by how simple the band's sound is. The band's recordings are pretty darn close to their live sound; simple, direct, and full of dueling guitars. Indeed, the live setting allows James Hoare and Jack Cooper a chance to stretch out and get a little rambunctious. Their interplay on the songs is bracing and intricate, their solos incendiary in a laid-back kind of way. "Ultimate Painting," the record's first track, proves right away that their live set, unlike their albums, can get a little wild as the guitars catch fire near the end. The last song of the set, the epic-length "Ten Street," unspools in extended solos that weave and slash like a less agitated Television or Dream Syndicate at their most expansive. In between those two bookends are seven songs taken from their two albums, played with energy and finesse, and differing just enough from the studio takes to make the album come alive. Ultimate Painting prove here that they can take their bedroom-cozy sound out to the stage with no ill effects. It's possible that the boost of energy from the crowd may even push them a little, which is not a bad thing at all. Fans of the band, and of smart, deceptively simple guitar rock, will want to check this set out for sure. ~ Tim Sendra
