About the Author

Sally Lloyd-Jones is a New York Times bestselling writer of over 30 books for children. Her work has been critically acclaimed by the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times and includes: The Jesus Storybook Bible, ALA Notable and Platinum Book Award winner; Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing, Association of Christian Publishers Adult Devotional Book of the Year; and the Christopher Medal winner, Baby Wren and the Great Gift. Sally was born in Kampala, Uganda, raised in East and West Africa and at a boarding school in the New Forest, England, studied at the Sorbonne, and now lives in New York City. Though Morris's (Animals of the Bible) lush watercolors accented with gold leaf obviously place the action at the very first Christmas, Lloyd-Jones's soothing, lyrical text expresses the universal love felt by parents awaiting the arrival of a new addition to the family. Numerous intimate portraits of the Holy Family, surrounded by realistic renderings of tranquil animals make this a fine volume for sharing. The gentle rhyming verses here may invite introductory discussion of not only the Nativity, but the joyous miracle of birth anytime of year. Ages 3-6. (Oct.) ("People were sleeping. We didn't care./Good news, we sang, our baby is here!/Our baby has come, our darling one,/Oh, the day that you were born"). The sumptuous watercolor and gold-leaf illustrations, bordered with cherries, peacock feathers, flowers, and stars, portray an arid yet animal-filled landscape enlivened by the gloriously bedecked angels and kings. A brief, poetic text and stunning illustrations flow together with magically successful pacing in this exquisite retelling of the Nativity story. The rhythmic text effectively uses the title words as a gentle refrain, along with the phrase "on the day that you were born." Simple words told from the joint viewpoint of the two parents offer rich images of "silver stars and golden moon," echoed by gold-leaf highlights in the art, as well as tender thoughts for their new baby, with kisses for "those tiny toes" and plans to "softly sing a lullaby." Superb watercolor illustrations in Morris's distinctive style are filled with deep, rich colors, swirling patterns and tender expressions between Mary and Joseph and their child. Woven throughout the illustrations are symbolic images from nature (flowers, butterflies, birds, fruit and shells) that have been seen in paintings of Mary and Jesus through the ages. Though this is a Nativity story, its message of awe and transcendent love will also touch new parents welcoming their own babies or expectant parents awaiting a miracle child of their own.
