About the Author

Susie Jaramillo is a mom, an artist and a creative director raising two bilingual children. She worked for many years in advertising having co-founded the vox collective, a NY-based boutique multicultural agency where she served as Chief Creative Officer until 2012. She attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where she majored in painting and illustration.

Susie grew up between Venezuela and the United States, always going back and forth fluently between cultures. As a child, she was exposed to songs and traditions from both the United States and Latin America. To bring to life all the things she loved about her Latino culture she created Canticos and now kids of all ages can enjoy these nursery rhymes and songs! She lives in Brooklyn.

A classic Spanish-language nursery rhyme, “Los Pollitos Dicen,” gains an English translation in this delightful accordion-style board book. Jaramillo wisely doesn’t force the English version to hew precisely to the Spanish. The hen searches for corn and wheat for her hungry pollitos in the Spanish version (“La gallina busca/ el maíz y el trigo”), but in the English retelling she “goes and gets them/ corn, from the field.” Numerous flaps and a turn-the-wheel feature add to the fun, and Jaramillo’s sweetly cranky chicks and their loving (and slightly weary) mother should draw smiles in both versions of the story. Toddler-PreS—An accordion-style board book featuring one of the most well-known Spanish songs for children. In this classic nursery song of the Spanish-speaking world, little chicks go, "!Pio! !pio! !pio!" when they are hungry and when they are cold; mother hen finds food for them and keeps them warm. Snuggled up under her wings, they sleep until the next day. In a clever use of the format—one side is the Spanish version, the other the English adaptation—neither language takes precedence over the other. In a nod to its origin, the English adaptation still has the chicks squealing in Spanish. The simple, brightly colored cartoon-style illustrations, boldly outlined in black, stand out against a white background. With every page turn, there are flaps to open and even a wheel that will send mother hen's legs spinning off to find food, making it a fully immersive and interactive reading experience. This sturdy volume comes in a case, all the better to hold those accordion pages with. With so many books translating English songs into Spanish, it is a rare treat to have one with an original Spanish song, especially when it is so engagingly done. A concertina-style board book features the Spanish nursery rhyme "Los pollitos dicen" on one side and an English translation on the other. Readers who tap the book out of its slipcase can choose either version; neither language is prioritized in the book's accordion-fold presentation. The illustrations are identical, as are the interactive features. The plot is simple: the chubby-cheeked yellow chicks squeal when they hatch, when they're cold, and when they want a meal, and their hen mother fetches corn to feed them and then cuddles them to sleep. Charmingly, even in the English translation, the chicks squeal in Spanish: "¡pío! ¡pío! ¡pío!" a protest that is printed in large, red letters on the undersides of several flaps. (Others lift to allow readers to husk corn and to see the chicks nestled under the hen's wing; a spinning wheel allows readers to send the rather tired-looking hen walking out to the cornfield.) The English translation shows itself in a couple of places, when the mother warms the chicks "head to heel" in a rather forced rhyme and in abandoning the sonorously stretched-out "a-cu-rru-ca-ditos" for the rather paler "snuggled up with mummy." Still, in an environment when all too often it's the non-English language that is the second-class citizen, this seems entirely forgivable. English speakers will want to read the Spanish so they can enjoy it fully. A thoroughly engaging, ingeniously designed Latino celebration. (Board book. 1-5)
