Description: This book provides an overview of varied disorders of the genitourinary tract affecting adults and children. It addresses common problems and reviews etiology and pathophysiology of the disorder, evaluation, including physical findings, laboratory and imaging studies, and treatment options. The essentials are covered in an appropriate manner.
Purpose: The authors desire to provide basic information of common urological topics that can be applied to clinical practice. Though the book appears to be directed towards urology residents in training, it would be of value to others specialists (those in training and those completing training) who encounter patients with disorders of the genitourinary tract. The authors meet their objectives.
Audience: The book is primarily for urology residents, but should be of value for other physicians in primary care, whether in training or in practice, who desire a guide to the evaluation and treatment of adult and pediatric patients with disorders of the genitourinary tract. Both authors are authoritative in their particular area (Dr. Ellsworth in adult urology and Dr. Caldamone in pediatric urology).
Features: It covers common urological disorders affecting adult and pediatric patients. Varied diseases are addressed including malignancies, infections, and congenital anomalies to name a few. Abbreviations are frequently used and, although a list of these abbreviations is included, at times their use is overdone (e.g., page 160 on prostatic calculi: "If asx, no rx necessary. If pt has sx rx including TURP or suprapubic prostatectomy." Others may very well have no problem with this manner of writing.
Assessment: This is a worthy contribution to the field and should be of value to those in training whether in urology or primary care specialties. The updated edition is well done and provides new information.
