About the Author

Craig S. Miller, DMD, MS, Professor of Oral Medicine, College of Dentistry, and Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics, College of Medicine, is the director of the Externship in Oral Medicine Program at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. He is board-certified in Oral Medicine and board-eligible in oral and maxillofacial radiology, with 33 years’ experience in the diagnosis and management of medically compromised patients.

Nelson L, Rhodus, DMD, MPH, is a Distinguished Professor and Director of the Division of Oral Medicine, Oral Diagnosis and Radiology in the Department of Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences in the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine, and Director of the Oral Medicine and Xerostomia Clinics.

Description: This is an update of a very popular reference on the dental management of patients with the most common medical problems that will affect dental care. The previous edition was published in 2002.
Purpose: The purpose is to give dental providers an up-to-date, concise, and factual reference for the dental management of patients with specific medical problems. This is an important goal, given the frequency with which the previous edition is used in academic settings. The book succeeds by providing detailed but concise descriptions of medical conditions, as well as how they will affect dental treatment.
Audience: The book is targeted at students, residents, practitioners in probably all dental specialties, with the possible exception of orthodontics. The authors are all respected professors in departments of oral diagnosis, microbiology, or oral medicine.
Features: Medical conditions thoroughly covered include cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and metabolic. The photographs and illustrations are of excellent quality. Unique to this book are the boxes of concise tables that give the features of the diseases and management. Shortcomings are in the area of format. The summary on dental management is confusing because each "problem" is on both sides of a page and there is no clear distinction between problems. Appendix A on dental emergencies is also not arranged so that it can be quickly referenced.
Assessment: This seventh edition is a beautifully illustrated, up-to-date, generally easy to use, and in-depth work that is most helpful to dentists who see patients with medical problems. This new edition, necessary to keep the information current, includes new sections on smoking, tuberculosis and sleep disorders.
