L'Ile des Penguins (Penguin Island) is a satirical fiction published in 1908. In the novel, a monk of old age and of poor sight mistakes a bunch of penguins as humans and baptizes them. The Lord has to concede and provides souls for the penguins, and thus the penguin history begins, which unfolds along with the plot. The book is a critique of human nature, and of some political and social aspects we all live in. It is also a satire on France's political history, including the Dreyfus affair (to whose satire the longest chapter is devoted).
The book is imbued with an ever-pervasive irony, which is one of the hallmarks of Anatole France.

About the Author

Anatole France (real name: Jacques Anatole Thibault) (16 April 1844 – 12 October 1924) was born in Paris, the son of a bookseller. He began his career as a poet and a journalist. His first success was the journalistic Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard (1881). It won him a prize from the French Academy, of which he became a member in 1896. He signed Emile Zola's manifesto supporting Alfred Dreyfus.
In 1893 he published his most celebrated novel, La Rotisserie de la Reine Pedauque (1893). His later works include L'Île des Pingouins (1908), La Révolte des Anges (1914), often considered his most profound novel, telling the the story of the guardian angel of Mr. Maurice, who falls in love and joins the revolutionary movement of angels to overthrow God. His entire work was anathema to the Roman Catholic Church.
He was a successful novelist, with several best-sellers. Ironic and skeptical, he was considered in his day the ideal French man of letters. He won the 1921 Nobel Price in Literature.
