Light in the Wilderness - Explorations in the Spiritual Life
"This remarkable and penetrating book deals with some of the toughest spiritual issues of our time."
-- Truman G. Madsen

Man's mind is the spiritual frontier. As we come to understand the difference between the experience on the Natural and the Spiritual Mind, we gain greater access to the unseen spiritual realities. We find the Light in our Wilderness is literal, and that it continually seeks access to our awareness. In Light in the Wilderness -- Explorations in the Spiritual Life, M. Catherine Thomas invites fellow seekers to search behind familiar gospel words and concepts to find greater revelation.

"Absolutely brilliant even blindingly so! Unlike any other book in print. The truths that Sister Thomas elucideates in this remarkable treatise are truly transformational, I've never read anything like this before. She puts substance where I had no idea it could be found."

"I had a near-death experience and want Sister Thomas to know that on every level she gets it and to an incredible degree of detail and profound understanding..."

I have read everything written by M. Catherine Thomas. She opened my understanding and gave me deeper insights into things I had pondered in the scriptures and about the purpose of my life. Her writing style and perception of stories and principles seemed to fit the way I think. When I first read her new book, "Light in the Wilderness: Explorations in the Spiritual Life," I was absolutely stunned at the depth of insights in this book. I felt it was her masterpiece. I have read it six times, and use its principles as a guide, along with my scriptures. It is book that has precipated some very important discusions with some of my friends. There is great enthusiasm in our community for this book. The applications are varied, and one must sometimes read a chapter very carefully in order to grasp the depth of her insights. The quotes, the poetry, stories and the scriptures she uses create a great treasure chest to draw upon. There are also many practical suggestions to follow. I recommend it to all ages and groups of LDS church members. I especially enjoyed the quotes by Jacques Lusseyran and bought both of his books as a result. She is a great writer and thinker and conveys her thoughts beautifully. I feel like I am reading Wordsworth when I read her book. Sue Maxwell/Provo,Utah

Light in the Wilderness is a gem & my personal favorite spiritual book next to the good words. Catherine gives amazing insight on how to take on life's challenges & find joy in the journey. A must read for anyone that wants more out of life!

Oh, to have the mind of Catherine Thomas. . . . her insights are breathtaking in their depth and understanding; her abililty to write and express herself, in almost a prose fashion, leaves the reader shaking her head at Catherine's innate talent and superior intellect. I hung on every word; my book is worn, with annotations in the margins of every page. This book can change lives; it certainly has mine. I will read it again and again, and I will be giving it as a gift to all those I truly care about.

Light in the Wilderness is a treasure. Catherine Thomas has helped me to explore and meditate on the deep mysteries of our relationship with God. It took me awhile to finish it because I found myself in deep meditation as I finish reading a page or even a small section of a page. Truth is everywhere as light is and I very much appreciate her efforts to bring sources from other religious, non-christian teachings to the analysis, including science sources. I highly recommend it to anyone who is not afraid to venture over the walls of simplified sunday school lessons.

This is a book that is comparable to scripture. Of course there are numerous scripture references in it but the key is how the author relates the scripture quotes to the common reader. I can not begin to explain how this book can further your understanding of the most important Gospel principles. It is a must read for those who want to heighten thier understanding of Christ. I couldn't wait to read it again even though I hadn't yet finished it. Highly reccomended because this book is indeed a light in the wilderness which all ca

About the Author

M. Catherine Thomas was born in Ohio, and at nineteen was first in her family to be baptized into the Church. She completed her doctorate in ancient history and is retired from the faculty of the Ancient Scripture Dept at BYU. She taught at the BYU Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies and on the London Study Abroad Programs. She has authored a number of articles and tow book: "Spiritual Lightning" and "Gospel Scholars Series: Selected Writing of M. Catherine Thomas." She is a popular speaker on gospel themes, having spoken to many groups both in the United States and abroad. She and her husband have served four Spanish and one English Speaking mission together. They are the parents of six children.

Her remarkable life story is captured in the latter section (the afterword) of the book. That alone was one of my favorite parts of the book and should serve as recommended reading.
