Overview

This is the premier biography of Stonewall Jackson, written in 1866 by a contemporary who knew him well, Robert Lewis Dabney. There have been many ensuing biographies of the great soldier-saint, and without exception they have heavily relied on Dabney’s work presented here in electronic book form. Followers of a movie released February 21, 2003 will recognize that much of the dialogue was taken almost word for word from this very book − Dabney’s magnus opus on Jackson, which in the opinion of most historians, best captures the general’s true character and personality. This new electronic edition preserves the exactitude and freshness of the original classic for a new generation who prefer the medium of electronic readers. This is no mere “scanned” or OCR copy. It has been judiciously re-typeset and exclusively formatted in an ebook layout. The buyer of this book will not find ink blotches or smears of type that may be found in the print of old books. It would be presumptive to say that one can improve upon the brilliance of Dabney’s biography; consequently the editors have been attentive to preserve his original wording whilst adding helpful annotations and information on casualty statistics, translations of Latin phrases, and explanations of some terms that have now fallen out of general usage. The result makes for a most enjoyable reading experience. Edits, translations, and additional diagrams and photographs were supplemented by historians Dr. Gary Lee Roper, and Lucy Booker Roper, co-founders along with Sprinkle Publications of the “Great Revival in the Southern Armies” Conferences held for many years in Virginia, Tennessee, and Mississippi. The ebook is a production of high quality at an affordable price.
