Description: This volume contains the proceedings of the 6th European Conference of Medical and Health Libraries; it was organized by the European Association for Health Information and Libraries.
Purpose: These proceedings are intended to give a scientific account of the conference. The book was prepared to provide professional librarians who could not attend the conference the benefit of the intellectual content of the presented papers. The papers cover current topics of concern and interest to medical librarians.
Audience: The audience is medical and health librarians concerned with keeping abreast with the trends of medical library science.
Features: The book is divided into fourteen chapters each dedicated to one of 41 topics. Each chapter contains an average of six papers, although the number of pages per paper ranges from two to nine. Most interesting were the chapters on evidence based medicine, user education and needs, remote access and document supply, and consumer and public health information. There are few illustrations but those included are helpful. There is only an author index, whereas a subject index would be more useful.
Assessment: This book is a fine and needed contribution to the field of medical library science. It is especially interesting that the concerns of medical librarians throughout Europe are very much the same as those working in the U.S. It is also helpful to learn how these concerns are handled by librarians in different countries. This was obviously a very useful and needed conference. The papers are informative and all medical librarians concerned with meeting the challenges inherent in modern medical library science could benefit from them.
