About the Author

Kimberly Jewell lives outside of Hartford, Connecticut, with her husband, Greg, and their two children, Liam and Lyla. She is a dedicated wife and mother who is passionate about increasing autism awareness in honor of her son who has autism. Kimberly graduated from Siena College with a BS degree in marketing management, cum laude. She spent twelve years working in human resources and currently works in real estate. In her free time, Kimberly enjoys traveling, cooking, and visiting with friends and family. This is her first book.

CHAPTER 1

Hi! My name is Lyla, and this is my older brother, Liam.

Liam has autism. Autism makes it hard for Liam to learn.

Some people with autism are not able to talk using words like you and me. Liam does not know how to talk.

Liam had to learn different ways to communicate so people would know what he wants or how he is feeling. I call this Liam's Special Language.

It is easy to learn Liam's Special Language just by spending time with him. Do you want to learn Liam's Special Language too?

Liam uses a tool called an iPad to tell us what he wants. The iPad has a special voice that talks for Liam. He can ask for anything but usually asks for food, toys, or his favorite people.

You can tell how Liam feels by watching him. Liam cries when he is scared or sad.

A hearty laugh means Liam thinks something is funny.

If Liam is stomping his feet, then he is mad.

When Liam is excited, he jumps up and down.

A wave is how Liam says hi and bye.
