I had just finished off my opponent in a one-on-one fight to win a championship that crowned me as the top player of my class in Everquest, the massive multiplayer online role-playing game, or MMORPG. I had conquered Dharma, from our archrival guild, Magna Carta. I wasn’t just “Erico” anymore. I’d become “Erico the Wanderer.” People from all over the game sent me private messages congratulating me on my victory. Everyone in my guild was ecstatic because we’d brought home another title that further entrenched us as the number-one team.

In the “real” world of my parents and friends from school, my win didn’t mean much. But to my thirteen-year-old self, a nerd who always sucked at sports and never caught the attention of girls, the victory felt major. I hadn’t expected to win. I had started out as a newbie, with nothing—no ammo, no equipment, no money and no weapons. I was naked, a peasant, an apprentice at best. Everyone I fought in the tournament had better equipment than I did and was stronger. I was only level 55 while they were all level 60—the highest level possible. But by fighting through tough situations and leveling up, I had surprised myself and won. Getting respect and validation from fellow gamers gave me the confidence that I could accomplish virtually anything in the world.

And, as I found out later, bringing the same attitude to my real life as I did to gaming did help me to pull off bigger things than I ever could have imagined.
