About the Author

Charlotte (Lottie) Loretta Sniderman Barr (1924-2004) was born on May 31, 1924, in Worcester, Massachusetts to Jewish immigrants from Lithuania. Lottie’s father owned and operated a second-hand store in downtown Worcester. Lottie’s family rented the second floor of a “triple-decker”, a three-story house in which the home owner usually lives on one floor and rents out the other two floors. Lottie’s mother had already been widowed twice before marrying Lottie’s father in 1922 at the age of 33. During the timeframe of these letters, Lottie worked for a wholesale grocery supply company “New England Grocer Supply, Co.” in Worcester, and at night took nursing classes that required working at a local hospital. Lottie had a very close relationship with her mom, and hearing her mom’s life experiences, along with growing up during the Great Depression, made Lottie a very independent and mature young woman. Lottie and George married in 1945, and had four children, whom they raised in North Miami, Florida.

James George Barr (1923-2007) was born on May 12, 1923 in Worcester, Massachusetts to Jewish immigrants from Lithuania. George’s family owned a small grocery store, aptly named, “Barr’s Creamery”, on 112 Water Street in Worcester. Throughout his teenage years, George helped out his father and mother in the store, along with his two older brothers and younger sister. The store provided the Barr family with a good to moderate income, which allowed them to purchase their own home and family automobile. George served as an aircraft radio repairman in the US Army Air Corps from 1942-1946 were he would rise to the rank of Sergeant. George and Lottie moved from Worcester to North Miami, Florida in 1955, where George worked as a salesman for packaging company until retiring in Aventura, Florida.

Daniel R. Mazza, P.E. is a Civil Engineer in the railroad industry by trade. He was born and raised in Okeechobee, Florida and while attending the University of Florida met his wife Vickie, the daughter of George and Charlotte "Lottie" Barr, who are the authors of the letters contained in this book. Daniel and Vickie have three adult sons and a daughter-in-law and live in Boca Raton, Florida.
