Letters Home: Richard Ostlund's World War II
My father Richard 'Dick' Ostlund, was a young soldier who served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served almost the entire duration of the war overseas in Ireland, North Africa, and Italy. My father marched across countries, lived in foxholes, and braved through situations most of us can't imagine. These letters are his words and thoughts, written wherever and whenever he had a chance to do so. After the war, he came home, got married, and raised a family with six children. We lost my father to a drunk driver at the age of 46. My memories of my dad are few, but these letters tell a story of him that I never knew. My efforts with this project are to share them with those who knew him and those I wish had the chance to know him.

About the Author

Richard Ostlund was a son, a brother, a husband, and a father. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Shortly after the war, Richard married his wife Mary, and together, they raised a family with six children. Twenty-three years after serving, a drunk driver killed him while he and his family were returning home from a day at the lake. Richard was 46.

Jon Ostlund is the youngest son of Richard. Jon was nine years old when his father died. Though memories of his father are limited, Richard has always been close in Jon's heart. Shortly after retiring from serving more than 33 years with law enforcement agencies as a 9-1-1 dispatcher and systems administrator, he wanted to honor his father's memory by compiling this book. Jon feels we all contribute to the people around us in so many ways, and we must preserve the legacies of those we love for future generations.
