About the Author

George D. Pozgar, MBA, CHE George Pozgar received his BA from Barrington College, now the Unit ed College of Gordon and Barrington, Wenham, MA, and his MBA in Health Care Administration from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. Mr. Pozgar is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Association of University Programs in Health Administration, and the American Health Lawyers Association. Mr. Pozgar is presently an author, speaker, and consultant. He was certified as a surveyor for the Joint Commission and has surveyed and consulted at more than 1,000 hospitals and ambulatory sites throughout the Unit ed States and Puerto Rico. He was a corporate consultant for the St. Barnabas Health Care System in New Jersey; Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Episcopal Health Services in Hempstead, New York; Administrator at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, Smithtown, New York; Assistant Administrator at Huntington Hospital, Huntington, New York; Administrative Resident, Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida; Administrative Clerk at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Washington, D.C.; and Research Assistant/Summer Intern for Booz, Allen and Hamilton Management Consultants, Washington, D.C. In addition, Mr. Pozgar was previously an instructor at the New School for Social Research, St. Joseph’s College, St. Francis College, and Molloy College in NY; on-site Faculty Member/Residency Preceptor for the George Washington University and Preceptor for a Brown University summer internship program; and, Seminar Instructor for C.W. Description: This third edition, last published 2014, presents health practitioners and management teams with healthcare laws, principles, court cases, ethical dilemmas, legal terminology, and implementation of these principles and laws to current circumstances and problems that impact health care legally. The content is well written, easy to read, and understandable, and provides current legal and ethical implications in health care throughout different lifespan stages, religions and cultures, specialty areas, and different healthcare professions.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide its readers with legal and ethical knowledge pertinent to all healthcare professionals and management. It is to be used as an educational guide, resource, and tool that presents examples of implications of current healthcare situations through presentation of laws, terminology, case studies, and ethical principles.
Audience: All current healthcare administrations and healthcare professionals can utilize this book as a reference and educational tool to assist with the implementation and creation of policies that serve as a guide for current healthcare practices. The book covers the protection of patients' and healthcare workers' rights, legal implications presented by current legal cases, and implications of deviance from laws due to ethical dilemmas, as well as many more legal considerations.
Features: This book is well written and has an easy-to-follow flow and layout. It provides pertinent examples and explanations of ethical and legal implications for all healthcare areas and professionals. The "Reality Check" sections throughout the book provide great examples of the implications and actual utilization of laws and legal principals to serve as discussion points, reinforce understanding, and engage the readers' interest. The content follows a typical textbook layout with headings and subheadings and bold and italic words to draw attention and importance. It also includes case and subject indexes in the back, which makes it user friendly and a great, easy-to-navigate reference tool.
Assessment: This book is a great tool to use throughout all learning levels and healthcare areas across all specialties, especially those focused on legal, ethics, management, and policymaking. It makes learning about various ethical and legal situations in health care easy and demonstrates how laws and regulations are implemented. It is also relatable and easy to understand. Many of the cases presented allow for great discussion about issues regularly faced in health care. Health care is currently facing the legal and ethical repercussions of managing a pandemic and we can utilize this information to assist with the challenges of staffing shortages, burnout, restrictions, vaccination mandates, disparities, economic impact, and many more.
