Leaving Taiwan; Learning America
David Alexander was in Asia within 7 months of finishing high school, but that time he wore the olive green uniform of the US Army in Vietnam, where he served in the construction engineers for 11 months. Finishing his enlistment, he returned to his home in Los Angeles and went to college. But Asia was in his system. Through a church connection, he went to Taiwan in 1976 and stayed for two years. He was converted.
After further graduate studies in Georgia and New Jersey, and after marrying the good woman from Michigan whom he had met in Taiwan, they returned in 1982 and spent the next 36 years doing a variety of things.
Retiring to Michigan in 2018, Dave began a transition to a different kind of life. Part of the transition involved listening to copious amounts of Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa music, and another part included blogging about the process. This book includes about 70 of the blog posts, ranging from those which are 100% about Taiwan through a few that mention Taiwan not at all. Most have a mix of the two cultures, and observations of one based on the other.

About the Author

David Alexander was born and grew up in Los Angeles, CA. After finishing high school, he served in the US Army for 30 months, 11 of which were in Vietnam. He was in Alabama when his enlistment ended in 1972, and got back to the Golden State as quickly as his 1946 Plymouth could carry him. Enrolling in college, he majored in Spanish. Finishing that degree in December of 1975, he became a bilingual instructional aid at an elementary school for a season, then returned to Taiwan in July of 1976. Taiwan has been his life since then.
Dave holds the Master of Arts degree in Theology from New Brunswick Theological Seminary and the Master of Education degree from Rutgers University Graduate School of Education.
