Description: This is a wonderful, thorough, and worthy book on leadership and management in healthcare. It covers a wide variety of topics and includes many learning exercises and special features. The website has an online version of the book, but also includes case studies and video training examples.
Purpose: The purpose is to present information about and examples of leadership and management. The objectives are to pair leadership and management roles and activities in the healthcare setting with a goal of developing readers' critical thinking skills through the many learning activities. These are worthy objectives, and the print and online version is an excellent partnership. The online version is easy to follow and has wonderful video additions.
Audience: The intended audience is nursing students, nurses, and managers interested in understanding leadership and management in healthcare, and the book meets their needs. The authors have been writing in this area for many years.
Features: The book covers a wide range of management and leadership topics from decision making and problem solving to ethics, time management, organization, quality control, and problem employees. The book does an excellent job presenting the topics in an engaging and thorough way. The authors include a wide range of exercises, case studies, key concepts, and questions. The book also includes a new feature of crosswalk, in which the author notes how the chapter addresses the BSN essentials, AONE competencies, and QSEN competencies. The learning exercises are definitely the best and this is a wonderful book for all students.
Assessment: The book and the resources are wonderful! I would highly recommend this for any nursing program. The authors have done an excellent job including learning exercises, questions, and instructor resources on the website. Students will find this a great way to learn. The authors include everything and the case studies and video clips are a great addition. I have never seen a book with so many exercises and such a variety of teaching methods. Very well done!

This second edition highlights the interdependent nature of leadership and management across a full spectrum of management processes. Such a philosophical foundation assists the reader to develop a framework critical for success in a management career. While presenting a theoretically sound and comprehensive elementary management text, the authors provide value-added bonuses: teaching tips and learning exercises aimed at whole brain thinking. Faculty are encouraged to engage students' imaginations and enhance their problem-solving skills by connecting real-life experiences to the content of the text. This stimulus may assist faculty who are motivated to try new teaching techniques, but may not directly motivate students of management to explore these venues alone. BSN nursing students and new nurse managers are the main audience for the book. The content is comprehensive for beginning management students but would be too fundamental for more sophisticated audiences, The authors are well established in the management field. The book is visually appealing, using color to separate sections and to highlight key material. Appropriate use of tables, displays, and key concept lists keep the reader centered on the main points of the content, The references are updated, although many older references appear that are not seminal works. The book is clean and organized in appearance. This second edition has added learning exercises and case studies with an emphasis on community-based situations. Content in key areas, such as transformational leadership, delegation, and time management are strengthened. A sound book, this offering is one of several quality texts in the field. Selection ofthis one would depend on the organization of its materials in relationship to a specific course's content and design. The addition of the updated content and quality learning exercises give this text the potential to stand out from the crowd for faculty who wish to experiment with different pedagogies. This book is also a good value for the price.
