Overview

"Lovely" is the word that comes to mind when listening to this piano - led trio. Piacentini prefers it soft and slow, with a delicacy that barely calls attention to itself. Yet, this is not "lite" jazz in any sense: The pianist is firmly in control of complex harmonies that sing with a sweet sonority. While his five originals gently breathe the atmosphere, the pianist's takes on Miles Davis' "All Blues" and the classic "Stella by Starlight" show just how creative Piacentini can be. "Stella" opens with somewhat abstract bass (Piero Leveratto) that only hints at the melody. The drums (Roberto Gasso) join in, and then Piacentini chimes in with some fast boppish lines and block chords. Electricity abounds and Gatto, in particular, keeps things lively. The melody is only laid out near the end. In contradistinction, "All Blues" is played as a quirky, playful waltz, allowing the musicians license to stretch. ~ Steve Loewy
