Overview

With probably the same personnel as the Columbia/Epic albums, the Bay band on Francis Bay's Latin Beat offers more of the same good stuff. Leading off each side, the treatments of "Mambo Jambo" and "Caravan" are hard-driving conga workouts with horns. Cheesy wah-wah trumpet in the latter adds something different to the old warhorse tune. The vocals on "Un Poquito de Tu Amor" are ambitious, including even the wordless "pow pows" associated with samba and Esquivel in the 1960s. The next two numbers show that Bay can play down-tempo too, capturing at least an exotic mood, if not exactly an authentic flavor. What sets Bay apart is his strength, however. Few Europeans ever interpreted Latin as well, at least not in a big band. ~ Tony Wilds
