Larry's adventure begins when the librarian drives away, not realizing Larry is on board, to return the bookmobile to the city library. Larry, searching for Pete, soon finds himself lost inside the library, where he is surrounded by busy librarians and patrons enjoying books. But will he ever find his way back to his best friend Pete?

John Skewes is a professional illustrator living in Seattle. As the creator and illustrator of the award-winning Larry Gets Lost® children’s book series, John has followed Larry from the southern tip of Texas to tiny Nome, Alaska, and has been lost several times himself.

Eric Ode is a national award-winning children's singer, songwriter, author, and poet who performs for schools, libraries, and community events. He is also the author of Sea Star Wishes and co-author of Larry Gets Lost Under the Sea. In addition to being a professional illustrator, Jaime Temairik is a spectacularly fun birthday party guest.

This is Larry.

This is Pete.

They’re here on the farm. What a wonderful treat!

With critters to care for and work to be done, a summer at Grandma’s is loaded with fun.

Now Larry hears honking. What’s this all about? “It’s bookmobile day!” Grandma says with a shout.

But then, with a click, and as quick as a bark, poor Larry has found he’s alone in the dark. The truck engine rumbles.

That pup’s in a bind. He’s on an adventure with Pete far behind.

He peeks through a curtain and nothing looks right. No farmhouse. No horses. And no Pete in sight.

They’ve come to a town, and wherever he looks, Larry sees buildings and people with books.

They come to a stop, and the doors open wide. That building’s so busy! Could Pete be inside?

Larry’s at it again.

Curious pup Larry is back again, having been lost in some 30 locales ranging from Boston to San Diego. His owner, Pete, is visiting his grandmother’s farm when the local library’s bookmobile arrives for a house call. There aren’t any books for Larry, but that doesn’t stop the inquisitive doggo from climbing aboard and taking an unintentional trip to the public library. Squeezing in through the book drop, Larry explores the building unobserved while the bookmobile driver searches for the lost dog. Eventually Larry is located and reunited with his family to rest after his busy day. The abcb rhyme scheme and strict meter of the text create a singsong effect when read aloud: “But then, with a click, / and as quick as a bark, / poor Larry has found / he’s alone in the dark. / The truck engine rumbles. / That pup’s in a bind. / He’s on an adventure / with Pete far behind.” The retro cartoon illustrations support the text with bold colors, but their crisp aesthetic and the on-the-nose nostalgic tinges give a soulless feel to the book, and Larry’s dead-eyed stare does not convey any doggy warmth. The story does give a cursory look at public libraries and the services they offer, but it’s hardly alone in this endeavor. Pete and his grandmother present White, and the bookmobile driver presents Black; library staff and patrons are diverse.

A lesser Larry adventure. (Picture book. 4-6)
