If you purchase only one textbook for large animal practice, be your work mainly equine or farm animal, this is the one you should buy. This is a truly global large animal veterinary medicine textbook, while retaining its relevance to UK and Irish practitioners. It is suitable as a reference book for students, general practitioners and specialists alike, and is well worth the price as a comprehensive review of large animal medicine.

Description: For 30 years, this book has proven to be the critical reference for study by residents in large animal internal medicine. Large portions of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine's Large Animal Internal Medicine examination series are derived from it. This fifth edition is a compilation of contributions from 242 authors.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide "the most current information available" in "an encyclopedic volume for the veterinary student or large animal practitioner working with horses, cattle, sheep, or goats."
Audience: The book is intended for students and practitioners of veterinary medicine.
Features: The seven major parts of the book cover history and examination; disease manifestations; neonates; laboratory tests; diseases by organ systems; therapy and prevention; and congenital/hereditary, immunological, and toxic disorders in 54 chapters. Illustrations and differential diagnosis boxes are interspersed liberally throughout the book. The boxes may prove helpful to some readers and distracting to others. The book follows the self-described "same popular format as the fourth edition." New features include new color plates, 1,210 illustrations, a new, sorely-needed section on equine abdominal ultrasound, and an excellent and needed section on new genetic tests, which are evolving more quickly than most books can be printed.
Assessment: The all-encompassing nature of this book makes it daunting to read. It will prove more useful as an encyclopedia, as described by the editor and author of the original edition, for students looking for information on particular patients or studying specific points before or during clinics. Placing a reference list "on the companion website" may prove to be a disappointment to readers who examine references frequently in order to judge the value or quality of author statements or observations. Based on this one omission, the print book may not be considered by some to be all-encompassing or encyclopedic. For those interested in only equine or food animal patients, there are less encyclopedic books available, but for mixed practitioners, residents in internal medicine, and veterinary and animal husbandry students who are undecided about a direction of study, this book will prove to be an invaluable resource for the study of livestock diseases.
