Description: This 560-page, full-size, softcover book is the third edition of a "comprehensive yet simple" book on laboratory medicine. The previous edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a broad overview of laboratory medicine in an intentionally simple manner for increased reader accessibility. These very worthy objectives are well met by this edition.
Audience: In its first edition incarnation, this book was geared towards those early in their medical careers (medical students, laboratory medicine residents). This edition would appeal to anyone interested in laboratory medicine, spanning those early in their learning careers to experienced practitioners interested in more effective use of laboratory testing. It is also relevant for clinical laboratory scientists at any stage of their careers and experience. The authors are all recognized experts in their respective fields.
Features: A few introductory chapters focus on broad concepts followed by laboratory medicine topics arranged by organ system. There is variability in the depth and breadth of the chapters, ranging from a broad and generalized overview of laboratory concepts and test methodologies (reflecting Mike Laposata's very direct, crisp, and clear communication style) to an encyclopedic, detailed and authoritative (yet surprisingly concise) chapter on infectious diseases. Color is used very effectively in the many diagnostic algorithms and tables. Just one minor gripe — the RBC photomicrographs vary in their total magnification (which is not stated), and some have background tints and shadows, and lack color compensation. The chapters vary in their discussion of appropriate test utilization too, but perhaps this is too much for this introductory book.
Assessment: This is a great addition to general laboratory medicine textbooks, and it is well suited for learners new to this discipline. I do worry it will lose its covers quickly because it is a softcover book that will be heavily consulted.
