About the Author

George E. Brooks is professor of history at Indiana University, where he has taught African history and world history since 1962. He first undertook research in western Africa in 1961, has since returned seven times, and has visited other parts of Africa as well. He is a fellow of the African Studies Association, a member of the Liberian Studies Association and the Mande Studies Association (MANSA), and serves on the executive council of the World History Association.
