LAND OF THE MORNING CALM

This ia a book about a war that wasn’t. Since only our Congress can declare war the title battles that took place in the early 1950's on the Korean Peninsula was not a war but a United Nations Police Action. Congress has only “Declared War” five times in our history. These include “The war of 1812", “The Mexican War”, “The Spanish American War”, “World War I” and “World War II”. (Actually Congress declared War five more times on various countries in WWI and WWII).
Remember the Marine Corps Hymn? It begins “From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli -. These are battles our Marines fought three different times in North Africa (Tripoli being one) without being “At War”. There are numerous other battles our troops have fought in our history that didn’t involve us in a formal war (I’m sure our troops who died in these battles appreciated that fact). The older ones were The Philippine :Insurrection, The Boxer Rebellion in China, the Russian Revolution, and a few interventions in South America. A bit better know was, The Greek Civil War- that resulted in a statue of Harry Truman in that country. Our ships guns played a big part in the revolution in Panama and the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy. The Yangtze River Patrol operated in the middle of China from 1854 to 1941. We could add a Non War with France in 1798 and Veracruz Mexico in 1914. Of course, this list doesn’t include our more modern adventures in Viet Nam, Gulf Wars I and II, Lebanon, Bosnia and Afghanistan
This is all leading up to “The war that wasn’t”. Korea, was a “Police Action” fought with other forces of the United Nations and under its flag. It just so happens that it is well on its way to becoming the second longest “Non War” in our history. It actually, ran from 1950 to 1953 when an armistice was signed but no Peace Treaty has ever been signed - ergo the “War” isn’t over. In fact, in March of 2013, the Peoples Republic of Korea, unilaterally, disavowed the Armistice so what is our present status? What is less well known is that, while this “Police Action” began as a war between North and South Korea that resulted with the practical destruction of the North Korean Army. It then became war between the United Nations and the Chinese army and, had our General commanding the forces at the time, had his way, could have ended up as a war involving a nuclear war between China, the USSR, and the United Nations
The facts: General of the Armies, Douglas MacArthur pushed hard for permission to take his forces to the Yalu River “and beyond as necessary” after his brilliant success in cutting off the head of the North Korean army at Inchon. He was so insistent that, when his plans were thwarted by the Chinese intervention, he hinted at the need to use nuclear weapons. President Truman fired him.
MacArthur continued to push his plans back in the states, even going so far as to make noises about running against Truman as a Republican, Nothing came of all this but he had many supporters both in the Civilian and Military worlds who were convinced that, had he been allowed to have his way, it would have been a success. In the end, though, he went to the US Military Academy and gave his “Old Soldiers never Die. They just fade away.” Speech. Some of his most ardent supporters in the military ranks, though, never forgave “the Government” for not allowing “Doug to win the Korean War”.
What would have happened if these men, who had by this time, risen through the ranks to positions of power, were able to restart hostilities in the peninsula in such a way as to make a nuclear strike the only feasible solution to saving an entire US Army Corps from destruction? Add in a bit of sex, mayhem, and mystery and you have this book.

About the Author

The Author was a member of the Quality Assurance Specialist Ammunition Surveillance Program to which the main male character in this book belonged. Personnel in this program are charged with making sure that ammunition blows up when it's supposed to and doesn't when it's not. When in the Continental US the task is a lot of testing, inspecting and repairing of munitions. Overseqs it' mostly entails furnishing logistical guidance where necessary and investigating incidents and accidents. During the Vietnam Conflict, many of these "Department of Army Civilians" were in helicopters flying out to isolated firebases and cleaning up after destruction of munition depots. While the plot to reignite a conflict on the Korean Penninsula is fictitious, many of the occurances in the book are based upon - often loosely upon - events that actually took place during the period covered by the book - many in which the author was involved. Tours of duty for the author included Ammunition Depots in Alabama, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, Germany and Korea, as well as staff assignments in Washington DC, and asan Instructor in California, Miesau Germany and at the Defense Ammunition Center and School in Savanna Illinois.
He, presetly lives near Galveston Bay south of Houston Texas with the same wife he married over fifty years ago. Together they raised two boys one of which is a retired Naval Aviator and he and his brother both work for the FAA in Oklahoma and Texas. Four grandchildren, two boys and two girls round out the family.
One great discovery is that the Author likes writing much better than selling.
