Overview

This is a story about a young girl who likes to daydream and play the days away instead of doing her chores. This is one of many stories my grandma told me to scare me into going to sleep at night. In this story Peaciwawala (Lali for short) jumps on her pony Lokie when her grand-mother Sittingjing-goongala (Gongi for short) calls her to grab the water jug and fill it up at the spring. Lali hates having to get water. The jugs are heavy and she wants to play with her dolly. When she and Lokie get to the waterfall and pool, Lokie breaks his tether and runs into the meadow to chase the birds and butterflies. Lali runs after him but he runs away before she can catch up with him. While they are still separated, a fierce storm comes in and it begins to snow. Lali has never been alone in the forest that far from home, and she is very afraid.
Her grandmother sits alone in the night by the fire in her teepee, switch in hand, waiting for Lali to return. But she is alone and clinging to life under the arms of a pine tree crying and thinking of how much she wants to be home with Gongi again. The Ancestral Elders watch her from their perch in the great thunderheaded clouds as they pass above the pine tree forest where Lali is shivering and trying not to be hungry.
This is Lali's chance to review her willful and disrespectful behavior. But Lali's moment of truth is yet to come on the morrow after the sun has risen.

About the Author

I was born and raised in New York City in the early 40's. We didn't have tv until I was 12 years old. When we did get one, it was 6" wide by 6" tall. The back of the tv extended about 2 feet. It was all tubes and wires. It was black and white and the tops of the heads were cut off, as were the hands and feet. The first tv movie I saw was "So Young, So Bad" with Ann Francis and Ann Jackson. I immediately ran away from home! I was very much like the heroine of my story "Lali & Lokie Run Away." I lived with my grandmother in a small apartment on Thompson Street. The bath tub was in the kitchen and the garbage cans were right outside our door. It was 5 blocks from the Bowelry, but there were drunken men sleeping on the streets and behind the garbage cans. It was a frightening life and it hurts to remember it. All my siblings were adopted. I was the first born of my mother's children. Being alone in the filth and stench of my childhood, gave me a broad space in which to create my fantasies, and in which the characters are normal. Not sick drug addicts and criminals like in my actual family.
I was able to escape my life after my grandma died, and found the ancient trail that ancestors had walked in milleniums past. I have followed it and my life has been beautiful and clean. I have created 12 books of poetry, 9 albums of original music, watercolors, weavings, many wonderful ceramics and am devoted to a Great Spirit whose wisdom and loving guidance have invested so much inspiration in me and lifted me from the pitifullness of my early years. I tell you the truth so that you can know it is possible to escape from fear and hopelessness. Never give up on your dream. It is out there waiting for you to find it.
