Lady Bumtickler's Revels
This is what you read on a Saturday, waiting for lunch, not wanting to get too warm.

Two ladies begin the book, discussing the opera which will take up the last three-fourths of the work. The theme is that #1 Victorian fascination: spanking. Women and one man are doing the spanking here—the victims are both men and women. There is no sex so if your mother asks what the fascination of flagellation is, this is the book you would give her.

One new theme here is age play. Women and men pretend to be youngsters who need a spanking.

It was printed in 1872 at 66 Drury Lane, London, a location which hosted printers since at least the latter 18th century. An undertaker worked there from 1815 to 1828.

Whether the opera was ever actually performed is doubtful. It would be interesting to see it staged in the 21st century! One of the characters says “I have not a doubt but it will be acted in a thousand private theatres.”

Victoria has been on the throne 35 years when this is printed, a bit past half her reign.

This, the fifth in the Authentic Victorian Erotica series, is the earliest volume originally published of those five. The next would be "The Pearl" magazine in 1879.

The present edition contains 22 notes by the 2011 editor translating unfamiliar words or pinpointing allusions. There are 4 modern illustrations.

Enjoy perhaps the most ribald opera every written, "Lady Bumtickler’s Revels."

About the Author

Finally we have a work of Victorian erotica with a public author. He was John Camden Hotten (1832-1873). Born in England, he spent 8 years in America as a young man. He came home to open a small bookshop and publish volumes such as "Lady Bumtickler."

This book was published in the year before he died, at age 40, a normal lifespan for the time.
