Still one of the most popular Westerns of all time, The Virginian is considered by many to be the prototype Western novel. First serialized in Harpers Weekly, The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains was published as a book in 1902.

Lin McLean, Wister's first novel, is about a young cowboy from the Wind River country in Wyoming who tires of the dust and hard life and heads east to Boston to seek his fortune.

About the Author

Owen Wister (1860-1938), a native of Philadelphia with Southern ancestry, attended Harvard University and practiced law in his native city. An author of short fiction as well as novels, his best-known work is The Virginian.
