About the Author

Jeanne Charters grew up in an Ohio town with three distinct subsets; Irish Americans like her, German Americans and African Americans. She never met an Italian American until she married one. All she knew of her ancestors was that one hundred per cent they came from all over Ireland. As did her first husband’s ancestors, so her four daughters are all of pure Irish heritage, which she says is a laugh considering that every marauder with a ship flying a pirate’s flag invaded Ireland. So, how pure can they truly be? But the very first time Jeanne visited Ireland, her blood stirred in recognition. The women looked like her, with the same hair frizzy from the sea air. And they were funny. And gabby. And party animals, just like her. The lure of that magical island has taken Jeanne back seven times since, sometimes for research, sometimes just for fun. Each time, she feels like she is home.

When Jeanne was four years old, she started dreaming of a young woman with flowing her hair riding bareback on a chestnut horse along the coast of the Irish Sea. Finally, the rider told Jeanne she was Mary Boland, Jeanne’s great grandmother whom she had never met. Research in America and Ireland produced not information about Mary Boland. It was as though she had vanished in the swirling mists of history. In one dream, Mary spoke to Jeanne, “Write my story.” So, she did. That story became Shanty Gold. Lace Curtain is the story of Mary’s daughter, Nellie Kelly.
