Description: This is a complete guide to laboratory testing in the ambulatory setting. The previous edition was published in 2011.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a guide to the most common procedures and techniques of current CLIA-waived tests and cardiopulmonary procedures performed in the ambulatory setting. These worthy objectives are met well by this edition.
Audience: The authors intend this book for students, and it would be useful to students in clinical laboratory science or allied health (e.g., nursing, medical assisting). It also would be useful as a refresher for practicing allied health practitioners or clinical laboratory scientists (CLSs) responsible for waived laboratory testing activities in an ambulatory care setting.
Features: This disarmingly slim book (approximately 1/2 inch thick) contains a wealth of information. It starts with laboratory safety and regulatory issues, then moves on to individual chapters focused on common laboratory testing practices in ambulatory settings (i.e., urinalysis, phlebotomy, hematology, chemistry, immunology, microbiology, toxicology, electrocardiography, ECG, and spirometry). Each chapter has a standard format beginning with fundamental concepts followed by procedures and finishing with advanced concepts. The procedures sections are beautifully illustrated with excellent figures and images depicting key procedural steps. New to this edition is inclusion of ECGs and spirometry, with how to do them and what they mean excellently depicted and described. There are additional online resources, such as the readymade PowerPoint presentations that are true to the book and a real timesaver for the time-constrained lecturer. Two very minor gripes: some of the photomicrographs have tinted backgrounds and less than perfect faithful color renditions and the paperback spine is likely to disintegrate with repeated use, especially in a wet laboratory setting.
Assessment: This is a very useful book for students interested in laboratory testing (including ECGs and spirometry) in the ambulatory setting. It is well worth the investment for any allied health practitioner planning to practice in this setting, or any practitioner wanting a refresher course.
