En el mes de mayo del año 987, un joven cayó de su caballo durante una animada partida de caza en lo que es hoy la Francia del noreste. Quedó seriamente lesio¬nado, sangrando de la nariz y la garganta. El 21 de mayo murió.
El joven tenía escasa importancia en sí mismo. Su nombre era Luis y era rey, pero esto era todo lo que podía decirse de él. Tenía veinte años de edad, había remado durante un año y su única preocupación verdadera era pasarlo bien. Entró en la historia con el nombre de Luis V, el Holgazán.
