Overview

V sbornik voshli dva proizvedeniya Dzhona Steynbeka, posvyaschennye koloritnomu miru truschob kaliforniyskogo goroda Montereya 1930-h. CHitatelyu predstoit znakomstvo s ochen neobychnymi personazhami, potomkami indeytsev, meksikantsev i amerikantsev. V osnovnom oni promyshlyayut melkim vorovstvom, nelegalnymi aferami i chasto okazyvayutsya za reshetkoy. No, nesmotrya na eto, chitatel pochemu-to ispytyvaet k nim simpatiyu. Grubovatye manery sochetayutsya u nih s vozvyshennymi stremleniyami, sklonnost k litsemeriyu oborachivaetsya trogatelnym prostodushiem, a hitrost i plutovstvo vnezapno smenyayutsya samootverzhennostyu i beskorystiem. Sam Steynbek v predislovii k «Kvartalu Tortilya-flet» tak otzyvalsya o svoih geroyah: «Vse eto – lyudi, kotoryh ya znayu i lyublyu; lyudi, kotorye prevoshodno prisposablivayutsya k okruzhayuschey srede. Takoe svoystvo chelovecheskoy natury zovetsya istinno filosofskim otnosheniem k zhizni, i eto – prekrasnaya vesch». Eti dve povesti nastolko lyubimy amerikantsami, chto oni ofitsialno pereimenovali montereyskuyu naberezhnuyu Oushen-Vyu-avenyu v Konservnyy Ryad.

About the Author

About The Author
One of the leading American novelists of the 20th century, John Steinbeck (1902-1968) grew up in the fertile Salinas Valley in California, an environment that served as a setting for some of his best-loved books. Several of his most powerful novels, including Cannery Row, Of Mice and Men, and The Grapes of Wrath, focus on the plight of California's laboring class, while East of Eden is an ambitious family saga and The Pearl is a simple, yet effective telling of good vs evil. Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962.
