For the ethical force with which he has pursued the indispensable traditions of Russian literature,Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970. He was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1974 but returned to Russia in 1994 after the Soviet system had collapsed.

Лауреат Нобелевской премии по литературе (1970). Диссидент, в течение нескольких десятилетий (1960-е — 1980-е годы) активно выступавший против коммунистических идей, политического строя СССР и политики его властей. Помимо художественных литературных произведений, затрагивающих, как правило, острые общественно-политические вопросы, получил широкую известность своими историко-публицистическими произведениями по истории России XIX—XX веков.
