CHAPTER 1

Basic Instructions

Use with each Animal Friend


FINISHED SIZES:

Each Animal Friend is 8 ½" wide × 12" high.


BODY & HEAD

Beginning at bottom, cast on 24.

Row 1: K across.

Row 2: P across.

Row 3: (K 3, inc) across. (30 sts)

Row 4 and even rows: P across.

Row 5: (K 4, inc) across. (36)

Row 7: (K 5, inc) across. (42)

Row 9: (K 6, inc) across. (48)

Row 11: (K 7, inc) across. (54)

Row 13: (K 8, inc) across. (60)

Row 15: (K 9, inc) across. (66)

Rows 17–32: Work in st st. At end of last row, cutyarn.

Rows 33–50: For Sweater, work according to individual pattern instructions.

Leaving 18" end, cut yarn; thread tapestry needle with 18" end and slip sts from knitting needle to tapestry needle; pull to gather and secure.


BODY SHAPING

With tapestry needle and matching yarn, sew ends of rows together at center back. Firmly stuff; with matching yarn, hold cast-on sts at bottom edge together and sew opening closed.

For legs, hold Body flat with seam at center back; with matching yarn, sew from center bottom edge through all thicknesses for 2½".

For arms, in same manner as legs, pinch 1" at side; with matching yarn, begin 2 sts below first sweater row and sew through all thicknesses toward shoulder for 3". Repeat on opposite side.

For neck, thread tapestry needle with 24" of Body yarn; at center back seam on row 51, run needle over and under every other st around; pull to indent slightly and tie.


COLLAR

Cast on 60.

Rows 1–4: For ribbing, (K 2, P 2) across.

Bind off in ribbing; leaving 10" end, cut yarn.

Thread tapestry needle with 10" end; sew ends of rows together. Matching seams, place Collar around Body; sew cast-on of Collar to last row of Sweater and secure.


FINISHING

1: For nose, with tapestry needle and black, using satin stitch (see illustration), embroider a ½" -wide circle on center of head or muzzle (see photo).

2: For eyes, with tapestry needle and black, using satin stitch, embroider two ½"-wide circles spaced 2" apart centered just above nose (see photo).

3: For mouth, with tapestry needle and designated yarn, embroider straight stitches (see illustration), according to individual instructions.

INVISIBLE INCREASE — Invisible inc: With left needle, pick up lp between stson last row, twisting the lp; knit or purlin back bar of picked-up lp.

CHAPTER 3

Elephant


MATERIALS:

175 yds pearl grey

50 yds med. teal

50 yds lt. tapestry gold

1 yd black

[] Tapestry needle

[] Polyester fiberfill

[] No. 8 knitting needles or needles needed to obtain gauge


GAUGE:

We are not responsible for lack of materials due to project not being worked to gauge. Gauge for this pattern: 4 st sts = 1"; 5 st st rows = 1".


NOTES:

Use invisible increase (inc) unless otherwise stated (see Stitch Guide).

For stockinette stitch (st st), work K rows and P rows alternately.


BODY & HEAD

With Body yarn, work Body & Head rows 1–32 in Basic Instructions on page 3. Work Sweater as follows:

Rows 33–34: With med. teal, work in st st. At end of last row, cut med. teal.

Rows 35–36: With lt. tapestry gold, work st st. At end of last row, cut lt. tapestry gold.

Rows 37-50: Repeat rows 33–36 consecutively, ending with row 34.

With Body yarn, beginning with row 51, work remainder of Body & Head in Basic Instructions.


COLLAR

With med. teal, work Collar in Basic Instructions.

EAR (make two)

With Body yarn cast on 12.

Row 1: K across.

Row 2: P across.

With Body yarn, cast on 16.

Row 1: K across.

Row 2: P across.

Row 3: Dec, K across to last 2 sts, dec. (14)

Rows 4–10: Repeat rows 2 and 3 alternately, ending with 8 sts.

Rows 11–24: Work in st st. At end of last row, leaving 18" end, cut yarn.

Thread tapestry needle with 18" end and slip sts from knitting needle to tapestry needle; pull to gather and secure. Sew ends of rows together. Firmly stuff Trunk; with seam at bottom, sew to center front of Head.


FINISHING

Embroider Eyes according to step 2 of Finishing in Basic Instructions.

CHAPTER 4

Pig


MATERIALS:

175 yds pastel peach

50 yds colonial blue

25 yds white

[] 1 yd each scarlet and black

[] Tapestry needle

[] Polyester fiberfill

[] No. 8 knitting needles or needles needed to obtain gauge

Rows 5–7: K each row.

Row 8: P across.

Row 9: (K 1, dec) across. (12)

Row 10: P across.

Row 11: Dec across. (6)

Leaving 18" end, cut yarn; thread tapestry needle with 18" end and slip sts from knitting needle to tapestry needle; pull to gather and secure. Sew ends of rows together. Firmly stuff Snout; with seam at bottom, sew to center front of Head.


FINISHING

1: Embroider Eyes according to step 2 of Finishing in Basic Instructions.

2: For mouth,(see step 3 of Finishing in Basic Instructions), with scarlet, embroider a ½"-long stitch on Head just to left of Snout (see photo); come out at center of stitch. Pull yarn across head and under Snout; insert needle opposite beginning of this long stitch; make another ½"-long stitch same as first stitch, running yarn under base of last stitch made (see photo). Secure end.
