Overview

- What was it like to grow up in the Oklahoma backwoods? Cheatiebo and her sisters knew. -

The "Blue Norther" froze any standing water in the poorly insulated structure, and the wind gusts threatened to level the old log cabin. Willie Joe bundled up and saddled the roan in preparation for the life-threatening trek to retrieve the only country doctor in the area. While he was gone, Mattie gave birth to twin girls after slipping on a patch of frozen amniotic fluid.

Such was the circumstance of Cheatiebo and Delia's traumatic birth on December 16, 1917-which opens the historical saga of the Wainwright family. They were eking out a living as sharecroppers like so many families of that time. Their hard circumstances produced highly self-reliant tillers of the land, toughened by dawn-to-dark, back-breaking labor. Based on personal accounts, composites of ancestors and acquaintances, the stories in Cheatiebo, the Folklorist weave a whole gamut of dangerous, strife-filled events that will keep the reader turning the page.

- Journey into a surreal existence in the Oklahoma backwoods, during a time long gone. -
